CHESTNUT RIDGE QUILT GUILD AUGUST 25, 2008 MEETING

WOW! GREAT MEETING!

Our meeting on August 25, was packed full of great ideas and activities. We are going on our Day Trip to some Northwest Ohio Quilt Shops on October 9. We will be using the services of Atlee Troyer's van for 14 ladies. If more are able to go, one of the ladies will drive. Dee brought a couple of other events to our attention. Three local quilt shops are sponsoring a Scrapbagger's Faire on Sept. 27 at Berlin Christian Fellowship. Also, an Afterglow on October 31 sponsored by Hearthside Quilt Shoppe. Contact them to get more information on either event. Pat handed out instructions for making next month's block – Ohio Star. She used Eleanor Burn's method for assembling. She also showed us the two blocks we will work on next month.

Lots of the ladies completed the Barbara Fritchie Star for this month. They were very colorful. Arlene showed a lovely embroidered quilt top. Mary S. showed a Market Tote Bag which would be ideal for carrying things home from shopping. A very green idea. Sue's niece made a book with a quilt block on the front and an original story inside. Also, quilts with Scottie Dogs (Rosie); Pot holders, Family Tree Wall Hanging (Lydiann); Horse lap tops in "just can't cut it" pattern (Pat). A current Quiltmaker magazine was passed around with Fast Flying Geese directions (makes 2 at a time).

Pat will demonstrate wide continuous binding. Also, she will show Star blocks #4 and #5. Mary Schrock will have refreshments.

Sue Jaberg DEMONSTRATES REDWORK

Sue gave a spellbinding talk on Redwork, which became popular in the late 1800's because of a colorfast thread made in Turkey, from a secret recipe. Up until then, colored threads didn't hold their color in the wash so could not be used success- fully to adorn everyday items like bedspreads or dish towels. They were embroidered with very simple stitches on inexpensive muslin. Children often learned how to embroider on "Penny Squares", little designs printed on muslin and sold at the general store for a penny. Redwork uses outline drawings which may be transferred to the muslin or drawn from a quilt pattern or pictures from books. Redwork can be embroidered in any color but is still called Redwork. Barbara Parrish recommends her favorite blue - DMC 824. The red she likes the best is DMC 321. Sue also suggested DMC 498(darker red), 304 or 817.Sue had some beautiful examples of redwork she had done in preparation the last 2 months. Sue recommended using a size 8 embroidery needle (big eye) and 2 strands of floss most of the time. Put your muslin in a hoop after transferring the design onto the muslin. Thank you, Sue.

THELMA GORDON was in charge of our "Ugly Fabric" Fun time. We brought any fabric we didn't want or need and they were all laid out on a table. Thelma called a few numbers and those with the numbers got 1 minute to pick out the fabric we wanted. She then picked three others to choose fabric. We did this a few times until most of the fabrics were taken. Everyone went home with some new fabric to start thinking about.

CHESTNUT RIDGE QUILTING GUILD

July 28 Meeting

Our next meeting will be on August 25 at Berlin Mennonite Church, 4718 US 62, across from J 'n J Furniture Store.

A discussion was held about a day trip we plan to take to some quilt shops in Northwest Ohio on Thursday, October 9. Renting a bus is rather expensive and we don't need something that big. It was decided to rent a 14 passenger van with driver. Effie checked with her husband and he is able to take us that day. If more than 14 are able to go, Cynthia said she would be willing to drive her car. More details will be available next month.

The Star block for this month is the Barbara Fritchie Star. Pat handed out instructions for this two-fabric star. A discussion ensued on whether to make it using all half-square triangles or making part of it as flying geese and how to pick the best methods for making flying geese blocks. Eleanor Burns has a method that some prefer that has no waste and uses her Flying Geese Ruler.

The Pansy fabric we will be using for our Challenge Project has been discontinued but Sara at Lone Star Quilt Shop has acquired some more. It would be a good idea to get as much as you need quickly.

Don't forget to bring your unwanted fabric for "Uglies Night" in August. We can bring any size or shape of fabric we no longer want, to be exchanged with others. They do not really have to be what you call ugly - just that you don't want it anymore. You may bring more than one. Sue will demonstrate Redwork for those who wanted to learn. Please bring needle, red thread (floss) and scissors. Pat will show us Star #3, The Ohio Star. Cynthia will bring the refreshments. Five ladies completed the star for this month. Arlene is making three of each block. Other projects this month were shown and some will be pictured on the blog. CHESTNUT RIDGE QUILTING GUILD

June 23 Meeting

Our next meeting will be on July 28 at Berlin Mennonite Church, 4718 US 62, across from J&J Woodcraft.

Pat Krier, our new president, handed out the patterns for the 12 Star blocks we will work on for the year. She will demonstrate one block each month and hand out instructions for assembling that block. We can either make a sampler of the different blocks or pick out our favorite(s) to make a quilt, wall hanging, table runner or whatever we desire . We also got our fat quarter for the Quilt Challenge, which can be any kind of project as long as we use the challenge fabric (plus any other fabrics we want.)

Cynthia gave the Treasurer's Report for the last year. We started the year on June 1, 2007, with a balance of $1,319.52. Our income for the year included dues, items sold at the Quilt Show and money taken in for the Silent Auction. Expenses included rent for the room at the Zink's Inn, postage, project costs and supplies for the quilt show. Our ending balance as of May 31, 2008 was $1,733. 24.

Arlene offered for the Guild to meet at her church, Berlin Mennonite Church on Rt. 62. There would be no charge for using the building each month. We will begin meeting there on July 28. Thank you, Arlene ! And thanks to the church for allowing us this privilege.

CHESTNUT RIDGE QUILTING GUILD
May Meeting

We began our meeting discussing possible projects for the next year. Some of the ideas were: Block of the Month - either Redwork, New York Beauty or similar theme for each month. The officers have met and drawn up a schedule for the year. We will have 12 different Star block patterns for the June meeting and we may choose to do a different pattern each month or use one pattern to make as many blocks as we wish. Pat will have copies of these 12 star patterns at the June meeting and she plans to have a sample of the first one.

We showed our lap robes for the County Home, a few had their quilt tops assembled for the year and other projects were shown. We also discussed other project ideas some of which will be included in this years meetings. Thank you to Ruth for the delicious cake and lemonade.
